The Nine-Step Process of Meditation on AUM #101
Luminaries, adepts, practitioners, and even devotees of other religions have all contemplated the great Principle of AUM from the Vedic tradition. As direct instructions go, few are as deep and complete as Shankara’s integrated look at this profound Word, that stands at the head of all projected things and all manifestation. It utilizes most of the powerful tools of advanced spirituality, fused perfectly with the most sublime philosophical tenets known to the seers and sages of Mother India. With this chart on full display wherever spiritual seekers are bound to gather, the incomparable secrets of The Word and its deepest meanings will never disappear from human consciousness again.
Vivartopadana #160
Vivarta, false superimposition, is a key principle in Vedanta philosophy, the point being that all manifestation/expression covers the formless nature of Reality. Left alone in Its purest state, Brahman is “partless, faultless, actionless, and divine,” to quote the Upanisads. When mentation begins, from the Cosmic Mind on down and out to the collective and individual minds, then does all that is “unreal” obscure the Real. Beings then take what has been projected by the mind, like matter and objects, as being the only reality. That there is more or less of the conscious shine of Brahman in every little thing, while Brahman remains partless and indivisible, this is the lesson of Vivartopadana taught by the Vedanta philosophy.
Signs of Battle — Maintaining Spiritual Life in the World #111
The day of spiritual awakening is dawning. The soul is remembering its true nature and source of origin. The primordial Divine Energy has also been stripped of its hiding place in human consciousness. Importantly, Maya has been uncovered, its negative influences caught and held in abeyance for the time being. The world presses in, trying to cover the brilliance of the revelation of the Atman and Its Purveyor, The Divine Mother Shakti. She beckons the soul out of its complacency and encourages in to enter the fray. Signs of battle are all around — in the world, at the work place, in relationships, even at home. The soul must now be on vigil in order to protect the spiritual vision that has awakened it from lifetimes of slumber.
Lack of Spiritual Success & Its Causes #100
A common occurrence and complaint among aspiring sadhikas and practitioners, in every age, is the lack of any appreciable progress along the path, sometimes even in the face of an active and ongoing spiritual practice. In the Vivekachudamani, Shankara takes this problem to task for the benefit of sincere seekers after Enlightenment. Most often it is an unclear or distorted perspective that hampers advancement, so the seeker, obtaining right guidance from the preceptor, must look both backwards and inwards to effect a solution. Then, and as long as the courage of one’s convictions remains steady and long-lived, certain signs appear that allow the practitioner to move forward with all assurance. All of this, and more is outlined in Shankara’s indepth scrutiny of all aspects surrounding this problem.
